Freewheeling Reviews

"A second album even more spirited and exhilarating than the first, thanks to new percussionist Gary Hammond, who drives the whole thing along in fine style. But this band's greatest asset is the sound of the ensemble in full cry, gloriously loose and unfussy."
Dave Gelly, The Observer 24th July 1994

"With its catchy hooks and melodic riffs, this is one of the most pleasurable albums I have heard in a while."
Jon Gower, Jazz on CD - September 1994

"Another bubbly, effervescent recording from the seven piece Zubop, prime exponents of what has come to be called Worldbeat Jazz. This is joyous open-hearted music some of which, oddly enough, reminds me of those fifties cross-cultural excursions by Sandy Brown, Bruce Turner and Humph. But the market place is much more crowded now and it is to their credit that Zubop not only manage to keep going but have won followers all over Europe. The problem is that in the UK jazz fans expect to sit with furrowed brow rather than respond naturally with their feet and bodies to this open, user-friendly music.
Brian Blain, Musician March 1995

"Reviewers have rightly praised this British band for its energy and freshness. Part of the reason for this is that it has suceeded where so many European bands have not - it has a rhythm section that swings, or in the case of the more overtly African pieces, that hits an authentic groove and holds it, building successfully as Hugh Masakela or Abdullah Ibrahim's bands do. The whole album is underpinned with a rhythmic firmness and drive that carries everything forward with zest."
A.S, Gramophone June 1995
