Cycle City - Background

Global Bop - Ricky Edwards
Consciously/subconsciously throwing together elements of South American folk, reggae and jazz. Stirring, brewing to a boil and serving them to you in celebration of the fact that the same warm red blood flows through the veins of all of us. (Ricky Edwards).

(In Search of) Cycle City - Ricky Edwards
Weary of the stupidity of mankind, a group of astronaut cyclists set off furiously. They immediately encounter an intergalactic storm which luckily throws them onto a peaceful land where nobody's in a rush for anything. The astronaut cyclists take time out to meditate and refuel (pump up their tyres), then continue their search for Cycle City with a refreshed, groovier kind of pedalling technique. (Ricky Edwards)

Cuba Si! - Will Embling
This composition was inspired by the music of Chocolaté, the trumpet virtuoso. The bass line weaves in and out of insistent on-beat piano chords as the trumpet and tenor saxophone flow between stating themes and improvising. After interplay between the horns and the flute, the flute solos over a 'montuno' (the Latin American term for a repeated piano pattern). (Philip Clouts)

These notes were written for the programme for a gig in Keele University Chapel, Thursday February 13, 1992, at which Zubop, with Lindon Donaldson on drums, performed material from Cycle City (Global Bop, [In Search of] Cycle City, Cuba Si!) and freewheeling (20,000 Leagues Above Peckham, Hanging Onto Anything That Moves, Down The Stairs), plus other unrecorded material (Bogota CID - Embling, Sunset Strut - Clouts, Lost in Thought - Petter, Stomp for Sisulu - Clouts).
